What's a Beacon?
Bluetooth beacon likes a smart lighthouse: it repeatedly transmits a single signal that other devices can see. Instead of emitting visible light, though, it broadcasts a radio signal that is made up of a combination of letters and numbers transmitted on a regular interval of approximately 1/10th of a second. A Bluetooth-equipped device like a smartphone can “see” a beacon once it’s in range, much like sailors looking for a lighthouse to know where they are.

iBeacon Marketing
Marketing professionals are increasingly using proximity marketing (also referred to as location-based marketing) to reach consumers, which is enabled by technologies like the beacon protocol standard.
Using the beacon protocol for proximity marketing involves apps on beacon-enabled mobile devices. Apple, for example, launched iBeacon technology for its devices in 2013. These apps access data that has been collected over Bluetooth from an external terminal owned by a business, such as in airports, bus stations, and retail stores. Once the data is collected, the app can then notify mobile users of routes, traffic updates, campaigns, or relevant information related to the person’s location.
